This is a screen (scream) adaptation of the Clive Barker short story of the same name. The screenplay for this movie was also written by Barker. Like many Clive Barker stories it has to do with human behavior and fear.

The story unfolds with two college students, Steve (Twilight's Jackson Rathbone) and Quaid (Shaun Evans), agreeing to work together to create a documentary of people's innermost fears. The two put out a call for candidates and document their interviews on video. Espousing the belief that by confronting one's ultimate fear an individual will either overcome their phobia or be consumed by it, Quaid convinces the more demure Steve, and friends Cheryl and Abby to participate in the study. Unknown to everyone involved, however, is Quaid's desire to take things to the next level, progressing beyond mere interviews to the actual physical and psychological nightmare of tackling their fears head on.

The gore is fun and realistic; the violence is severe but not comedic. This is a dark and brutal movie that builds to a really grand crescendo. Great special effects that axe buried in the head looks very real. Director Anthony DiBlasi (who produced The Midnight Meat Train) and Barker have made a movie for smart people who can appreciate a world without happy endings and don't need to be appeased by having villains, heroes and resolutions. The well-written script and thorough examination of the concept of fear is a real step up from the typical Hollywood shock-for-no-reason torture movies.
