SYNOPSIS: "The FBI" Story was Warner Bros. two and a half hour epic tribute to the world famous Law Enforcement Agency, charting it's formation from it's lowly beginnings in the early twenties to the late fifties.
From a literate screenplay by Richard L. Breen and John Twist it was all ably handled by director Mervin LeRoy. James Stewart - in what must have been his only foray into the cops and robbers genre if you discount his role in Vertigo - plays a fastidious federal agent who takes on such notorious underworld figures as Ma Barker, Dillinger,"Baby Face" Nelson etc. as well as sorting out organisations the like of The Ku Klux Klan, Nazi spy rings and the Red menace. Apart from all that there is some tedious domestic sentimentality involving Vera Miles who has the totally uninspired role of Stewart's ever devoted and long-suffering wife.
Beautifully photographed in colour by Joseph Biroc the picture also benefits greatly from a terrific score by the veteran Hollywood composer Max Steiner particularly in the Ku Klux Klan and South American scenes.
An entertaining and enjoyable movie if a tad long at 149 minutes but Jimmie Stewart is great to watch and as always holds the interest.
