The year 1970 was when Elton John and Bernie Taupin made their breakthrough, with Elton John's eponymous album and Tumbleweed Connection, the latter heavily featured here. They entered an artistic stride that carried them to their creative peak, Madman Across The Water a year later. Elton's first live album, 17.11.70, comes from this period, but this great sounding San Francisco soundboard tops that, not least by being a full gig rather than a 40-minute edit (the official album has two numbers missing here, Take Me To The Pilot and the forgettable Bad Side Of The Moon).

Five of the eight songs are superb. Reg sings a treat in this classic venue. Acknowledging the third-hand nature of the American influence on Taupin's lyrics (like everybody else, he'd been listening to a lot of The Band) he covers the Stones' second-hand piece of Americana, Honky Tonk Women. This and the long rock 'n' roll medley are, frankly, one-time listens, while the version of Can I Put You On goes on too long, but at least it mentions Sheffield and Newcastle, a lyrical nod in the right direction.

Put this together with Madman Rocks Tokyo from the following year and the never officially released orchestral live album from '72, Philharmonica Freedom, and you probably have all the early live Elton John that you need. - David Belbin
