Though not as widely known as Hammer's popular Dracula and Frankenstein series, this is one of the studio's more stylish and intelligent projects. The tale is set in 17th century Serbia in the tiny burg of Stettel, whose residents live in fear of an encroaching plague. The frightened villagers welcome the arrival of a colorful traveling troupe dubbed "Circus of Nights," unaware that the visiting entertainers pose a far more deadly threat: the company is also composed of shape-shifting vampires capable of transforming themselves into animals to stalk their prey. Less a standard Hammer monster melodrama than a surreal journey through dark fantasy (reminiscent of Jean Rollin's erotic vampire series), with an unexpected (but not entirely inappropriate) surplus of nudity and bloodletting.

Don’t forget; there is the wannabe Roman Polanski look-alike (The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) anybody?)
Of course it was more fun watching Lalla Ward (aka the Time Lady Romana (No2) Romanadvoratrelundar, in Doctor Who) in her first film as Helga.
Within a month of leaving the Central School of Speech and Drama, Lalla was cast as the vampire Helga in the 1971 movie Vampire Circus. Her other appearances from that time until her term in Doctor Who include parts in Rosebud, The Prince and the Pauper, The Duchess of Duke Street, Leap in the Dark, and Who Pays the Ferryman?
