The Boat That Rocked is an ensemble, comedy film, released in the UK on April 1, 2009. Set in 1966, it tells a story about pirate radio broadcasting from ships to the United Kingdom. The film is written and directed by Richard Curtis and was made by Working Title Films for Universal Pictures. The Boat That Rocked stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Emma Thompson, Nick Frost and Kenneth Branagh. Principal photography started on 4 March 2008 on location off the southern English coast and ended in June 2008.

The Story

"The Boat That Rocked" is musical comedy set in Britain during 1966 and it features a band of rogue disc jockeys playing records from a boat off the coast of England in international waters. Known as the pirate station Radio Rock its broadcasts annoy the prim government of the day because the official BBC stations were not playing rock and roll music all day long and Radio Rock defied government policy. While the story has some relationship to real events it does not represent any specific station that was broadcasting to Britain in 1966.
The Radio Rock djs are led by a brash American calling himself The Count. The station boss who lives on the ship, is an Englishman known as Quentin. They are joined by Gavin who has just returned from America and claims to be the greatest dj in Britain. Most of the time when the djs are not on the air they engage in a series of sexual romps with female listeners who visit the ship. All of this angers a government official whose job it is to close the station down, but his attempts to do all meet with embarrassing lack of success. In the end it is not the government but the North Sea weather that ends the story.
